Time to take care of your lawn

We use a service – “hometurf Lawn Care Service”. We are happy with their service. They come by at least eight times in a season with different treatments. Recently they applied a fertilizer and a weed control that eliminates broadleaf weeds like dandelions.  They always drop off an explanation of what they did and give us some recommendations about how to care for our lawn.  They focused in on ‘mowing’ this time. Here’s what they had for us:

Mowing habits play in important role in the overall health of your lawn, especially in the spring. Turf can be mowed frequently, but no more than l /3 of grass blade should be removed in a single mowing. Hometurf recommends a typical mowing height of 2 to 2.5 inches during the spring. Mow when the lawn is dry; dry grass cuts cleanly and clippings distribute more evenly. Leave the mulched clippings on the lawn to break down naturally.

Animals Digging?

White grubs are common pests of lawns in 0ntario that feed on the roots of grasses and other plants. This feeding results in the wilting of the grass in irregular shaped patches on the lawn. The wilted grass can be easily pulled free due to the destruction of the root system. Secondary damage may occur due to animals such as skunks, raccoons and other animals digging up the lawn to feed on grubs.

To prevent animals digging we recommend applying repel products or home remedies such as cayenne pepper or moth balls to the affected areas. 0nce you have stopped the digging, flatten the lifted areas and apply seed to help the area recover.
